Santa's arrival in Agen

Yesterday morning was the grand opening of the Christmas market and the grand drop-in arrival of Santa, or well, Père Noel.
We met up with the Hamilton's at 9:30, to walk over to the Prairie de Pont Canal. We figured that if we were there by 10 or 10:15, with Santa dropping in at 10:30, we would have a great place to watch from. We made it to the Pont Canal by about 10:10 or so, and waited. Around 10:20 a horse drawn carriage pulled up. We figured this was great, meaning that Santa couldn't be far off. Around 10:30 a lot more people started arriving. We figured that at 10:30 Santa was jumping out of that plane and if you weren't there by then miss it(judging from other events that we can gone to see and missed). We were completely wrong. By 10:40 we were all starting to get cold and really wondering where was the big jolly guy in red.

Suddenly, a little plane appeared in the distance.

Everyone started to get excited. It flew over and dropped something, which at first everyone thought was Santa. Nope. Just a flag thinger. The plane then flew away and the excitement died. A few minutes later, the plane re-appeared, but this time up higher, and Santa and an elf jumped out.

The elf landed first, then Santa. All throughout the crowd there wer murmuring "Il est trop mince" (He's really skinny). Santa was quickly whisked away. They lit some more smoke (like that in the background of the pictures) over by the cars. It was suppose to hide the fact that Santa was doing a quick change and that the mayor was getting out of the car. Except, they forgot to factor in the direction of the wind and the change was in clear view of everyone -- not that he was naked, no no no, just, you know, had to get out of his parachuting gear... (we'll leave it at that for now...) Then Santa and the Mayor got into the horse drawn carriage and the kids all crowed around while Santa and Mayor handed out clemantines.

Then we all headed up to the Christmas Market, which is fairly petit, but very festive all the same. There's a skating rink now in the middle of down town (at +5-10 degree weather... I'm not sure how they do it) and several little booths set up leading to and from it. It's quite cute. For the opening day they had Frosty and the Mayor and several other important people out opening this and that and everything. They had bands playing Christmas-y type music and it was just very festive all around.

However, now I'm going to stop typing because my appartement is very cold and my hands are freezing, so this typing thing isn't going so well. It's time to hide back under the covers.

OH OH! One week from today I start on my journey HOME!! I can't wait!!
